Just last week, I swear, it looked like winter had arrived.
Snow had fallen and the temperatures, both day and night, were below freezing.
This week though, a completely different story. With yesterday alone being 65 degrees, it sure doesn’t feel like the coldest season of the year right now.
Nevertheless, we’ve continued learning all about the winter season this week, even though it no longer looks or feels like it. Our favorite project so far? Practicing winter vocabulary by making our own winter themed picture dictionary!
A picture dictionary is such a fun way for preschoolers to work on vocabulary skills because it allows them to associate the word their learning with a visual.
With this particular project, we also found a way to work on a few other things like scissor skills and handwriting as well.
What I love about picture dictionaries is that they can be made for just about any subject or theme that you can think of. Whether you’re learning about farm animals, the planets in our solar system, items you would find in the grocery store, or in this case, the winter season, a picture dictionary like this one is a fun, fast, and easy way to incorporate a little vocabulary work into your preschooler’s day.
This printable winter dictionary is super easy to put together as well!
Within the download, you’ll find two separate versions. The first is for younger children that are still learning to form their letters and includes a traceable version of each included word on their own page. For older preschoolers, or even kindergartners, that don’t need the help, their is a second dictionary that has the word printed on each page, but the handwriting line is left blank so they can write the word in themselves.
Once you have your chosen pages printed out, cut the dictionary page printables into four separate pages, but leave the picture page intact.
Have your child color the pictures however they’d like so they know, from the beginning, what pictures they’ll be adding to their dictionary.
To build your winter picture dictionary, go through each page and have your child start by writing in or tracing the winter themed word.
Once their word is written, bust out a pair of scissors (carefully, of course!) and have them cut out the corresponding picture.
Paste it right onto your dictionary page and move on to the next one!
When they’re done, just grab a stapler and secure the pages together along the left side to make a book.
Now, as you and your preschooler learn all about the winter season, you have your very own picture book to review whenever you’d like!
