With the arrival of summer comes a lot of things. Most notably, lazy summer days by the pool, sand castles built on the beach, and fun family road trips.
Of course, with kids, road trips can also be quite stressful. Whether you’re stopping every half hour because someone needs to use the bathroom or listening to “are we there yet?” a thousand times, it’s enough to make you want to forget the whole thing.
Hopefully however, with a few of these tips, you’ll be ready to hit the road for a fun family adventure while leaving the stress at home.
Spend a day or two before you leave planning out your time in the car. Now, that doesn’t mean you need to schedule out every minute of your trip, but figure out the basics. How long will the trip take you? Where will you be stopping for meals? For the night?’
Making a plan ahead of time allows you to see exactly how long you’ll be in the car each time. Try to break up the trip with short breaks every so often so that everyone can get out of the car long enough to stretch their legs. Plan those breaks ahead of time and let your kids (if they’re old enough) know the schedule so that they’ll know when a break is coming up. They’re likely to cooperate a little more if they know they’re getting out of the car in 20 minutes versus just knowing that you’re still 10 hours from your destination.
Keep them busy!
This goes back to the planning stage a bit as this will take some planning as well. If you’re looking at quite a few hours in the car, what do you have for the kids to do? They’re kids and they are not going to want to sit in the same spot for hours on end with nothing to do. The more that you can take their minds off of being stuck in the car, the better.
Make sure that you have plenty of snacks (making sure that everyone has their favorite always goes over well), plan to pack enough books, games, and items to keep them entertained, and always make sure that you have a couple of quiet activities in case someone in the car is sleeping.
For younger children, busy bags make fantastic travel items and many of them can be made portable. Before your trip, add some magnets to the back of matching games, puzzles, and other fun items and take along a metal cookie sheet. The cookie sheet itself will lay flat and won’t take up a lot of room but pairing it with the magnets means that your child can play for hours without worrying that their pieces are going to be flying all over the car.
Keep it clean!
There is nothing worse than being stuck in a car for hours that is packed to overfilling and smells like every fast food restaurant that you’ve passed.
The dollar store often has tons of bins and baskets that can be used to organize your car for a long trip. Throw a shoe organizer over the front seat to hold your child’s games, books, and snacks so that they are within their reach and make sure that you take along a few plastic bags for trash. Make sure that everyone knows where their trash belongs and when you make a pit stop, toss it out.
