Late last year, Nicholas really started taking an interest in flashcards. Letters, numbers, colors, whatever. He enjoyed them all.
We made some really simple number flashcards of our own and, at the time, he loved them.
Since we’ve been talking about and working with numbers this week, we’ve pulled out quite a few of our favorite counting books but there was one that really caught his attention. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
Now that he’s getting a bit older and we’re working on counting, sequencing, and other early math skills, I thought it would be fun to give those old flashcards a little bit of an update.
Not only are we using these as actual flashcards but we’ve been practicing our counting with the foods, trying to sequence them in order from smallest to largest and, by printing off two copies, using them to create a caterpillar matching game.
All of the foods from the story have been included and it has been a lot of fun watching him match them to the correct foods in the book as we read through it.
In fact, with the number of times we’ve read through that book now, I could probably recite it to you in my sleep!
He’s having fun with them and learning to count at the same time so either way, I’m happy to continue reading it 🙂
If you’d like to join in on the hungry caterpillar fun, go ahead and grab the printable! I hope you enjoy them as much as we do 🙂
