When it comes to cooking in the summer months, the very last thing you want to do is heat up the house using the oven.
With the heat index over 115° here on multiple days, our air conditioning has a tough enough job without the added heat. So what is a dessert lover supposed to do? Well, they find a way to enjoy a sweet summer treat without ever stepping foot near the stove.
In fact, this delicious dessert will actually help cool you off! Even better, the kids can help you make it!
No bake, no fuss, and comes together in less than 5 minutes, these homemade ice cream sandwiches are the perfect summer treat and 10 times better than the kind you’ll find in the grocery store! So grab the kids and get ready to dig in!
Now, first things first, you’ll need to gather your ingredients. Did I mention that this was no fuss? Well, it is! Just 2 simple ingredients that we found right in the frozen section of our local Publix!
- Sara Lee® Pound Cake (you can use any variety that you like but we chose to go with the Double Chocolate Pound Cake Slices as they were super simple to use and absolutely delicious)
- Breyers® Ice Cream (any flavor you like)
For the ice cream portion, we actually bought a couple of different flavors to test them out and they were all fantastic with this, so whatever flavor you like, go for it! To make this even better, right now take advantage of $3.00 off any ONE (1) Sara Lee® Frozen Dessert 9.6-30 oz. and Breyers® Ice Cream 48 ox. (combined purchase required) now through 8/28/15 at your local Publix while supplies last!
Now it’s time to get the kids involved! With the pound cake that we bought, each slice was wrapped individually. Just remove a slice from the packaging and place it on a plate so that you have somewhere to build your ice cream sandwich.
With this dessert, we actually used 2 slices to make our sandwiches, but the next time that we make these we will most likely end up just cutting a single slice in half so that they’re thinner. While this was delicious and the kids loved it, it was just a little too much for little hands.
Next up, add your ice cream. Let your kids pick their flavor and scoop it on. It’s actually a fantastic workout for their fine motor muscles!
Now, you can add a little chocolate syrup if you’re going for a super sweet summer treat or leave it off, either way, you’re going to love it!
Finally, have your little ones top off their sandwich with the second slice of pound cake, have them lightly press the whole thing together, and you’re all done!
